Sequoyah Elementary School Grounds Closed to Public Indefinitely
Facebook Post from KPSHA, April 13, 2025:
As many are likely aware, the Sequoyah Elementary School administration has decided to prohibit access to the park behind the school at all times, even at night and on weekends when school or after-school programs are not in session. They have indicated that this closure will remain in effect all summer.
While we support the school's interest in safety and security for the children, Kingston Pike-Sequoyah Hills Association was not consulted in this decision and was not offered the opportunity to help alleviate any concerns the school had. When this fence project was built, neighborhood residents (including some KPSHA board members at that time) helped raise thousands of dollars to enhance the fence in place today. They were assured the park would remain open for neighborhood use during nights and weekends.
KPSHA is trying to work with the school leadership to discuss and alleviate their concerns. If you are interested in allowing neighborhood access to this park, please let the school know and let your local elected leaders know. KPSHA will post updates on progress as it occurs.
Spoke with Katherine Bike (neighbor and KC School Board member). She was quite aware of the situation, and volunteered to speak and run a Q&A session at the annual meeting Monday April 28 in the school gym. Mark your calendars for this one. I think she can be very helpful. She also is contacting the chief of school security for KCS to see what factual information they can provide...there are multiple 'stories' floating around, and it would be good to hear the official side of things.

In response to a submitted comment on the CONTACT US tab on this website, KPSAH will add a poop-station to the area around the Library on Southgate. KPSHA currently funds the poop-stations found along Cherokee Blvd. A resident contacted KPSHA about adding one near the Library on April 14, 2025, and the same day, our supplier responded that it would be installed soon. This wonderful program supplies the poop-station, removes waste constantly, and replaces the bags each time. Please let us at KPSHA know if you need a poop-statioon in other locations in the neighborhood. Your KPSHA membership funds this neighborhood service. Thanks for being a member, and please join to help our neighborhood respond to important issues.
